Lemercier, Jacques

Lemercier, Jacques
(ca. 1585-1654)
   architect, sculptor, engraver
Born in Pontoise, Jacques Lemercier, a major French architectural innovator, came from a family of architects. He went to Rome in 1607 and, in 1618, became the chief architect to King louis x III and, in 1624, architect of the louvre. He worked on the church of Val-de-Grâce, begun by François mansart, on the Oratory, and on the plans for the church of Saint-Roch in paris. He built the pavillon de l'Horlage at the louvre (after 1624, and the west and northeast wings of the courtyard). Lemercier laid out the plans for the town of Richelieu (Indre-et-Loire, begun in 1631) and built nearby an immense chateau (today destroyed) for Cardinal richelieu. In Paris, he built the Palais Cardinal (1629-36), which became the Palais-Royal. In the domed church of the sorbonne (1635-42), he transposed the italian forms with such a spirit of balance and strength that he can be considered one of the founders of French classicism.
